Anal Fistula: Surgical Evaluation and Management
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (January, 1996)
Authors: Robin K. S. Phillips and Peter J. Lunniss
Average review score:

The definitive work on the subject.
My fistula and I have grown quite close, and I thought it was time to learn more about this little friend I call "Tiny."

This book--well, it's more like an epic or a tome--went into more detail than anyone but the most obsessed proctologist would ever want to know. Makes for great bathroom reading!

Analyzing Philosophical Arguments an Int
Published in Paperback by Chandler Publishing Co ()
Author: Ian Phillip Mcgreal
Average review score:

Hard core philosophical thinking
This is McGreal at his best. He takes on the greatest of thinkers: Mill, Zeno of Elea, Plato, Hume, Kant. His analysis of the flaw in Zeno's arguments against motion (The Achilles) is brilliant. If you want to read a book that takes famous philosophical arguments apart with a G.E. Moore type precision, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. It is tragic this book is out of print. Email me if you are a fan of this book. We should form a study group to go through its arguments. markpoggioli@hotmail.com

The Anglo-Scots Wars 1513-1550: A Military History (Welfare in History)
Published in Hardcover by Boydell & Brewer (November, 1999)
Author: Gervase Phillips
Average review score:

A great book on a neglected topic
Mr. Phillips has writen an excellent campaign history on a theater of conflict largely ignored. The two "bookend" battles of Flodden and Pinkie are often alluded to in histories of the British Isles during the 16th century. What this book does is place them in context of a prolonged struggle, and demonstrates how "little war" alters the outcome of famous battles. The book begins with a defense of campaign history, which I happen to fully agree with. "One damn battle after another" is the basic stuff of military history, and without it, nothing else can be understood: econoomic and social aspects are secondary to the need to fight as best one can. The author then reviews the makeup of the respective forces, and shows that the British Isles were not a stagnant backwater, but participated in all the current trends in warfare, to the best of their ability. The heart of the book is its chronological history, putting the two famous battles in context of various sieges, raids, ambushes and the like. These little struggles explain why, despite the great English victories at both Flodden and Pinkie, Scotland survived intact. The maps are easily read and clear (adequate maps are a necessity in military history). It is not inexpensive, but well worth the money if you are interested in this era.

A Must-Have for AZ Birders
Though the text is over 20 years old, this little book is still a highly valued and regulary-opened part of my library. Anyone wanting to be well-informed on the birds of Arizona should have and read this book.
The distibutional and subsepecies information is impeccable. Nothing newer has come along to replace it.

Applied Data Communications: A Business-Oriented Approach, 3rd Edition
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (14 December, 2000)
Authors: James E. Goldman and Phillip T. Rawles
Average review score:

Applied Data Communications - A Business Oriented Approach
Unlike many books, written on today's technology issues, Jim approaches this topic from the business perspective. This top-down approach allows one to understand how a set of technologies maps to the business drivers. This books looks at business impact from a business management perspective. Moreover, this book covers a range of topics that allow the reader to understand the complexity, and interrelationships, of today's distributed internetworking environment.

The reader will be exposed to layered architectures - understanding how they interrelate, yet remain separate. The topics range from an overview of Data Communications - including voice, through local area networking - protocols and OSs, WANs, internetworking and remote access. The book closes with coverage of the network development life cycle, network management and security.

What sets this book apart from many is the way Jim approaches technology solutions based upon business drivers and criteria. Technology, in and of itself, does not enhance a business' ability to deliver value. However, when one approaches technology solutions, or innovation, based upon business criteria they are more likely to add value to the bottom line. Jim encapsulates the concept of value added technology solutions in his presentation of data communications. This book is well written, concise, and understandable - a must read for individuals focused on technology and business!

Arco Divorce: A Women's Guide to Getting a Fair Share
Published in Paperback by Arco Pub (September, 1995)
Authors: Patricia Phillips and George Mair
Average review score:

Or, A Woman's Guide to Protecting Herself in her Marriage
Marriage is a business contract, and men break the contract all the time! I never thought my man would divorce me. But after 23 years and 4 kids, he decided he wanted out so he could be free to play around (aka finding himself). So buy this book as soon as you can, even BEFORE you think your marriage may be in trouble. I think Amazon should give chapter headings in their reviews, so I'll do it for you: Chap 1) Bad Divorces Happen to Nice Women (that's me; was I TOO nice?) Chap 2)Think about Divorce before you marry (wish I had!) Chap 3)What to do when your marriage is dying (recognizing when he's on his way out, and start protecting yourself) Chap 4)Choosing a lawyer; Your Most Important Decision Chap 5) What to Expect from Your Lawyer Chap 6) What your Lawyer expects from you Chap 7) Your Children and Your Divorce Chap 8) Money and the Divorce Treasure Hunt (find the money he's hiding from you. If you can't show that it's there, you can't claim your share!) Chap 9 After you File for Divorce (the legal roadmap) Chap 10) Discovery: What it is and How It Works Chap 11) Getting Ready for Trial Chap 12) The Trial Chap 13) The Ending Chap 14) Special Issues (violence, etc) and Appendices with a great little summary of divorce laws of all 50 states.

This book would have saved me a number of mistakes before our separation, but at least I got this excellent advice soon afterwards. No one book can have everything in it, so when you are ready for the "meat" of your finances, get the Violet Woodhouse book, Divorce & Money; How to Make the Best Financial Decisions during Divorce. Good luck and God bless.
